ARE UNIVERSITIES DICRIMINITORY?

Are universities discriminatory?

A question that has sparked much debate in the past and has recently been picked back up as the new SAT scoring method has been proposed with an “Adversity Score”.

So, are our beloved education institution a place of prejudice? We can look at admission statistics and say for some that they accepted more of a certain race or gender. But to truly find out if a university is discriminating, we must look deeper.

For instance, if each major has their own admission standards and accepts an equal amount of people, there may still be a race imbalance at the college.

EX: The Science department at a certain school has 8 students apply. 4 are black and 4 are white. they accept 2 black students and 2 white students, leaving 50% black students who applied and 50% of white students who applied accepted. Another department, the business department, has 12 people apply. This time 8 are black and 4 are white. Once again 50% of each get accepted, so 4 black students and 2 white students get accepted. For each of these scenarios, 50% of each race is accepted, which would be looked at as equality.

However, when you crunch the numbers, and take into account the entire university, 20 students applied in total. 6 black students were accepted and 4 white students. Also taking this into account, the acceptance rate for the entire university would be: Black: 50% White 66.6%.

This is just an example of how many try and push the false agenda that universities “look for minorities” or “look for the majority”. Although race is probably taken into account, the qualifications for a certain university far exceed the racial bias.

Remember: Numbers don’t lie.
